Genral framework
In this research I will start from the idea that the University (and the academic world in general) is a social and cultural context in which knowledge (meaning) is negotiated. Academic literacy refers to being able to understand, use and adapt the discourse of the academic community. In other words, students have to become socialised in the discourse community of their specific discipline.
One the hand students have to become aware of the construction (and rhetoric) of the academic discourse and on the other hand they have to be able to write a “scientific†paper.
This view sees academics as not simply producing texts that plausibly represent an external reality, but also as using language to acknowledge, construct and negotiate social relations. Writers seek to offer a credible representation of themselves and their work by claiming solidarity with readers, evaluating their material and acknowledging alternative views.
